Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Nov, Dec
Chiang Mai's best weather by a wide margin: cool mornings, warm dry afternoons, and the lowest rainfall of the year. It's also when everyone else has the same idea, so the Old City and Doi Suthep get genuinely crowded and hotel rates climb to their highest point of the year. If you want these months, especially around November's Yi Peng lantern festival, book well ahead.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Sep, Oct
This tier covers two very different halves of the year. February through April is still technically dry season: hot, and increasingly hazy from agricultural burning, but real rain stays rare. May, September, and October sit on the other side of the monsoon: expect genuine rain, usually as a heavy but short afternoon downpour rather than an all-day washout, so mornings are typically clear for temple visits and sightseeing. Either way, hotel prices sit well below peak-season rates and the crowds thin out noticeably.
Off-peak season: Jun, Jul, Aug
The wettest stretch of Chiang Mai's year, with rain most days and the countryside around Doi Suthep at its greenest. That doesn't mean writing off a summer trip. Showers are usually intense but brief, mornings are often dry, and you'll find the lowest hotel prices and thinnest crowds of the year. Pack a proper rain jacket, keep outdoor plans flexible, and check the afternoon forecast before you head out.
Good to know
🔥
Burning season, January to April
Crop-fire smoke builds up through the dry season, peaking in March. Air quality is at its worst right when the weather looks its best on paper.
⛰️
Doi Suthep stays cooler
The mountain temple overlooking the city sits at 1,000m, so pack a light layer even on hot days in the valley below.
🌪️
Monsoon downpours can flood fast
August and September see the heaviest rain: short, intense afternoon storms are typical, sometimes causing local flooding.
✈️
Its own international airport
Chiang Mai (CNX) is Thailand's 4th busiest airport with direct flights from Seoul, Taipei, and several Chinese hubs, not a Bangkok-only connection. That said, most itineraries still route through Bangkok, since it's Thailand's dominant hub with the most frequent, cheapest options.
Top attractions
1
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
The mountain temple overlooking the city. Locals say you haven't really visited Chiang Mai until you've been. Go at dawn for the 306-step climb alongside monks, or sunset for the view over the valley.
2
The Old City temples
A walled, moated square packed with centuries-old wats: Wat Chedi Luang's towering ruined chedi and Wat Chiang Man, the city's oldest temple, are the standouts among dozens.
3
Night Bazaar & Sunday Walking Street
The whole Old City transforms into a market on Sunday evenings, with street food, handicrafts, and live music. The nightly Night Bazaar is smaller but reliable any day of the week.
