Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Apr, Oct, Nov
Ha Long's best weather, spring's tail end into autumn's start: comfortable temperatures, less rain than the summer monsoon, and a break from winter's cold, clammy skies. Late October into November is the more reliable of the two windows, when the bay is calmest for cruising, April can still catch the very end of a cool spell or the first build of pre-monsoon heat. These are also the best months for clear photos of the karst islands, since haze and cloud cover thin out.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Jan, Feb, Mar, May, Sep, Dec
This tier covers real variety. December is markedly better than the months right after it, sunnier and less cool, though still firmly winter. January and February are the coldest, cloudiest, and most drizzle-prone months, with the least sunshine of the year. March starts warming but stays mostly grey. May and September sit at the edges of the summer monsoon, hot and increasingly wet but not yet, or no longer, at its worst.
Off-peak season: Jun, Jul, Aug
The heart of the summer monsoon: hot, muggy, and prone to sudden heavy downpours, with August the wettest month of the year by a wide margin. Cruises can be affected by rough seas or cancelled routes when a typhoon passes through, typhoon season runs roughly late May to early November but peaks across these three months.
Good to know
✈️
Most visitors arrive via Hanoi
Ha Long's own Van Don Airport has very limited routes, mostly domestic with occasional charter flights. Most travelers fly into Hanoi's Noi Bai instead and drive roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours to the bay.
🚢
Overnight cruises are the classic way to see the bay
A one or two night boat trip through the limestone islands is the standard way to experience Ha Long, rather than a single day visit, with cabins, meals, and cave or kayaking stops built into the itinerary.
🏞️
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994
Ha Long Bay was first inscribed in 1994 and expanded in 2000 for its geology, then combined with the neighboring Cat Ba Archipelago into a single World Heritage site in 2023.
🌀
Typhoon season can disrupt cruise schedules
Running roughly late May to early November and peaking July through October, a passing typhoon can mean rerouted or cancelled cruise departures on short notice.
Top attractions
1
Sung Sot Cave
The bay's largest and most visited cave, a roughly 10,000 square meter chamber on Bon Hon Island filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
2
Cat Ba Island
The largest island in the bay, home to Cat Ba National Park and one of the last strongholds of the critically endangered Cat Ba langur.
3
Ti Top Island
A small island with a beach at its base and a steep climb to a viewpoint over the surrounding karst islands, a regular stop on bay cruises.
