Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Mar
Hue's best window, when the last of the northeast monsoon fades and drier, clearer days settle in. Late January is usually when the rain properly breaks, the first few weeks can still catch a leftover soggy spell some years. By mid-March the heat starts climbing fast, so this stretch is at its best in its first half.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep
This tier spans the hot half of the year. April carries on the dry season's low rainfall, but the heat builds hard heading into the hottest months. May through August see little rain and plenty of sun on paper, but temperatures regularly push into the high 30s and beyond, sometimes past 40°C, so the imperial tombs and citadel are best toured in the early morning. September starts the turn toward the wet season, with rain climbing noticeably from the months before it.
Off-peak season: Oct, Nov, Dec
The heart of the northeast monsoon, when Hue earns its reputation as the rainiest stretch of Vietnam's central coast. October is the wettest month of the year by a wide margin, and November isn't far behind, with the Perfume River prone to rising and streets around the citadel sometimes flooding. December's rain eases some but still runs heavy, especially in its first half.
Good to know
✈️
Phu Bai Airport is domestic only
Hue's own airport (HUI) connects only to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, no international routes. Many travelers instead fly into Da Nang, about an hour away, and continue to Hue by road.
🌊
Flooding is a real risk, October and November
The Perfume River has breached serious flood levels in recent years, including record rainfall in late October that submerged parts of the city and forced thousands of tourists to relocate. Keep travel plans flexible during this window.
🏛️
Vietnam's first UNESCO World Heritage site
The Complex of Hue Monuments, the citadel, palaces, temples, and royal tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty, was recognized by UNESCO in 1993, the first site of its kind in the country.
🎭
The Hue Festival runs every other year
This biennial celebration of imperial-era arts and culture doesn't happen annually and its timing has varied between spring and summer editions, worth checking the calendar if the dates might overlap with a visit.
