Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Dec
Ko Chang's best weather by a wide margin: dry, sunny days, calm seas, and the lowest rainfall of the year. It's also the busiest and priciest stretch, the west-coast beaches and dive boats fill up and resort rates climb to their highest point of the year, so book ahead if you want a spot on White Sand or Klong Prao beach. December in particular is the coolest, driest month of the whole year.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Mar, Apr, May, Jul, Oct, Nov
This tier covers two different halves of the year. March and April are still technically dry season, hot and increasingly still, with only the first pre-monsoon showers appearing, while November sees the rains fade out fast as the dry season returns. July and October sit within the wetter half of the year, rain remains frequent, but conditions ease slightly compared to the deepest stretch of the monsoon on either side of them. Across all of these months hotel prices sit well below peak-season rates and the island feels noticeably quieter.
Off-peak season: Jun, Aug, Sep
The core of Ko Chang's monsoon, when rain falls on most days and many of the smaller beachfront resorts and bars close for the season entirely. The heaviest downpours tend to arrive overnight or in the early morning, so afternoons are often more manageable than the totals suggest, but ferries can be cancelled in rough seas and outdoor plans need to stay flexible. It's also when you'll find the steepest discounts and the emptiest beaches of the year, if you don't mind the gamble.
Good to know
⛴️
No airport on the island
The nearest airport is small Trat, with limited Bangkok Airways flights from Bangkok, followed by a songthaew and a short ferry crossing from the Laem Ngop piers. Many travelers instead take a direct bus from Bangkok straight to the pier, a 5 to 6 hour ride.
🏚️
Many resorts close in low season
Roughly June through October, expect a number of restaurants, bars, and smaller beachfront guesthouses to shut down entirely. Some larger and family-run resorts stay open year-round with steep discounts.
⛈️
Tropical storm season, June to December
Storms are more frequent September through November and can bring heavy rain and rough seas. Ferries occasionally pause service in bad weather, so build a buffer day into travel plans booked around this window.
🏝️
Beaches cluster on the west coast
Nearly all of the island's beaches, hotels, and restaurants sit on the west coast, around White Sand, Klong Prao, and Kai Bae. The east coast is quieter and largely undeveloped, with mangrove forest around Salak Phet rather than sandy beaches, worth a visit for kayaking, not for swimming.
Top attractions
1
White Sand Beach
The island's original and liveliest beach, a 3km stretch of soft white sand backed by jungle-clad hills, now the main hub for hotels, restaurants, and its own night market.
2
Klong Plu Waterfall
The busiest and most easily reached waterfall on the island, a 40-meter drop into a large plunge pool, about a 600-meter walk from the entrance along a well-maintained trail.
3
Bang Bao fishing village
A working pier village of stilt houses and seafood cafes extending out over the water on the southwest coast, with a small lighthouse to climb at the far end.
