Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Dec
Krabi's best stretch by a wide margin: dry, sunny days, lower humidity, and the calmest seas of the year for boat trips out to Phi Phi and Railay. It's also the busiest and priciest time, book Ao Nang and Railay well ahead if visiting between December and February. Rain is rare, though December can occasionally bring a short, intense shower.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Nov
This tier spans quite different halves of the year. March and April are still hot and mostly dry, but pre-monsoon showers become more frequent as the season turns, especially by April. May, June, and July sit within the early monsoon, rain is a regular presence and the sea can turn rough, though it hasn't reached its wettest point yet. November, right after the monsoon retreats, can still bring heavy rain in its first half before conditions dry out toward December.
Off-peak season: Aug, Sep, Oct
The wettest stretch of the year, when the southwest monsoon is at its strongest and rain falls on the majority of days, October especially. Seas along this Andaman-facing coast turn rough with dangerous currents, and boat trips to the islands are more likely to be delayed or cancelled. Hotel prices drop to their lowest of the year to match.
Good to know
✈️
Krabi has its own well-connected airport
Krabi International Airport (KBV) has direct domestic flights from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Ko Samui on multiple airlines, plus direct international routes to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, a real regional hub rather than a single-carrier connection.
🌊
Seas get rough in the monsoon
The southwest monsoon, roughly May through October, can bring dangerous currents and red-flag warnings on exposed beaches. Boat trips to Phi Phi, Railay, and the outlying islands are sometimes delayed or cancelled in bad weather.
🚣
Railay and Tonsai have no road access
These cliff-backed beaches, a short longtail-boat ride from Ao Nang, are reachable only by sea, factor in a boat transfer either way.
This coast catches the monsoon head-on
Facing the Andaman Sea directly, Krabi gets noticeably heavier southwest-monsoon rain than Thailand's Gulf-coast islands like Ko Samui.
Top attractions
1
Railay Beach
A boat-only peninsula ringed by towering limestone cliffs, with four distinct beaches and some of the best rock climbing in Thailand.
2
Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay
A day-trip cluster of islands between Krabi and Phuket, with turquoise water and dramatic limestone peaks, including Maya Bay, made famous by the film "The Beach."
3
Ao Nang
Krabi's main tourist hub, a beach town with easy access to longtail boats, dive shops, and restaurants, and the usual starting point for trips to Railay and the islands.
