Ganesh Chaturthi, dates vary each year
Mumbai's largest festival, ten days honoring the elephant-headed god Ganesha, with elaborate public shrines across the city and a final procession carrying idols to the sea for immersion. Falling on the Hindu lunar calendar, it usually lands in late August or September; hotels and streets near major pandals get extremely busy.

Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Dec
Mumbai's best stretch: dry, sunny days with virtually no rain and cooler evenings, though days can still get surprisingly hot. Nights turn genuinely cool by local standards, sometimes dropping below 20°C, so a light sweatshirt is worth packing. This is also the busiest, priciest window for hotels.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Mar, Apr, May, Sep, Oct, Nov
This tier spans real variety. March through May bring the pre-monsoon heat, dry but intensely hot, sometimes reaching the high 30s. October and November sit just after the monsoon, still hot and occasionally reaching similar highs, though the rain has largely stopped. September is the tail of the monsoon, rain easing but still a real presence, and typically when the city's biggest festival, Ganesh Chaturthi, takes over the streets.
Off-peak season: Jun, Jul, Aug
The heart of the southwest monsoon, when rain falls almost daily and can turn torrential, July alone averages well over half a meter of rain. Flooding and transit disruption are common in low-lying areas, and the sky stays overcast for days at a stretch. Hotel prices drop to their lowest point of the year to match.
Good to know
✈️
A major global air hub
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International (BOM) is India's second-busiest airport, with direct flights to around 127 destinations across every inhabited continent.
🌊
Monsoon flooding is a serious, recurring issue
Heavy downpours regularly overwhelm drainage in low-lying areas like Andheri and Chembur, and local trains, the backbone of city transit, are frequently disrupted or suspended during the worst spells from June to September.
🌡️
Hot days, cool nights, even in "winter"
December through February brings the year's biggest day-to-night temperature swings, highs near 30°C with lows that can dip below 15°C, worth packing a light sweatshirt for evenings.
🌀
Cyclone risk exists, though direct hits are rare
Mumbai was largely spared for decades, but Cyclone Nisarga (2020) and Cyclone Tauktae (2021) both affected the city directly, and even distant cyclones can bring heavy rain in November and December.
