Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Mar
Phan Thiet's driest, sunniest stretch, hot but not the year's most intense heat, with the least rain of the year and the strongest, most reliable winds for kitesurfing in Mui Ne. This is also the busiest, priciest window for beach resorts.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Apr, May, Jul, Oct, Nov, Dec
This tier spans real variety. December is warm and mostly dry, but a typhoon remains possible until around December 20, keeping it just behind the peak months. April is still dry season but the hottest month of the year. October, May, and July sit within the rainy season without quite reaching its wettest extreme, and November eases back toward the dry season with strong kitesurfing winds returning.
Off-peak season: Jun, Aug, Sep
The wettest stretch of the year, though even this is mild by Vietnamese standards, rain is moderate rather than torrential, and dry spells of several days are common. August has the most rain days of the year and September the highest total rainfall. Hotel prices drop to their lowest point of the year to match.
Good to know
✈️
No commercial airport of its own
Most visitors fly into Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat and continue to Phan Thiet by road, a journey of roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours depending on traffic.
🪁
Vietnam's kitesurfing capital
Steady winds from November through March, strongest in December and January, have turned Mui Ne into one of Asia's best-known kitesurfing and windsurfing destinations.
☀️
The driest, sunniest corner of Vietnam
This stretch of coast faces southeast, out of the direct path of both monsoons, so Phan Thiet gets far less rain and far more sun than almost anywhere else in the country. February can go the entire month without measurable rain.
🌀
Typhoon risk lingers into December
Southern Vietnam sees its typhoon peak in early November, with some risk continuing until around December 20, worth keeping in mind for early-December trips.
Top attractions
1
White Sand Dunes (Bau Trang)
Sweeping white dunes beside a small lotus-covered lake, the most dramatic of the dune fields, with sledding down the slopes a popular activity.
2
Fairy Stream (Suoi Tien)
A shallow stream that winds between eroded red-and-white sandstone formations, best explored barefoot walking upstream through the shallow water.
3
Red Sand Dunes
Smaller and closer to town than the white dunes, with reddish-brown sand and gentle slopes, especially striking at sunrise or sunset.
