Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Jan, Feb, Mar
Quy Nhon's best stretch, when the last of the northeast monsoon fades and drier, sunnier days settle in. Late January onward is the most reliable window, the first few weeks of January can still catch a leftover soggy spell some years. By April the heat starts climbing hard, so this stretch is at its best before then.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Dec
This tier spans the hot half of the year. April carries on the dry season's low rainfall, but the heat builds hard heading into the hottest months. May through August see little rain and plenty of sun on paper, but temperatures regularly push into the mid-30s and beyond, with nights that barely cool off, so Ky Co and Eo Gio are best visited in the early morning. December still carries some of the last northeast monsoon rain, though it's markedly calmer than the months just before it.
Off-peak season: Sep, Oct, Nov
The heart of the northeast monsoon, when rain turns torrential. October is the wettest month of the year by a wide margin, and November isn't far behind. Typhoon season also overlaps the tail of this stretch.
Good to know
✈️
Phu Cat Airport has just two routes
Direct flights connect only to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The airport sits about 35km from the city center, roughly a 40-minute transfer.
🏖️
A quieter alternative to Nha Trang or Da Nang
Quy Nhon has developed more slowly than other central-coast beach cities, with fewer crowds around its beaches and Cham-era sites.
🌊
The sea stays warm and swimmable most of the year
Sea temperatures rarely drop below the mid-70s Fahrenheit even in the coolest months, and the calmest water for swimming lines up with the dry season.
🌀
Typhoon season overlaps the wettest months
Running roughly September through early December, this coincides with the heaviest rain, so boat trips to Ky Co and Cu Lao Xanh island can be delayed in this window.
Top attractions
1
Ky Co Beach
A cove of turquoise water and white sand backed by granite cliffs, often compared to tropical islands further afield, reached by boat or a coastal road.
2
Eo Gio (Windy Pass)
A dramatic rocky inlet carved by wind and waves, with a clifftop walking path offering sweeping views over the East Sea.
3
Thap Doi Cham Towers
A rare pair of 12th-century Cham brick towers right in the city center, with Garuda carvings showing a blend of Champa and Khmer influence.
