Sa Pa's most reasonable stretch for hiking. Spring in March and April brings blooming flowers and a break from winter cold, while November offers some of the clearest, driest air of the year before winter sets back in. None of these months are truly dry, expect some rain and mist regardless, but they're as good as it gets here.

This tier covers real variety, since Sa Pa rarely offers an easy choice. October is mild but rainy, right at the edge of the golden rice-harvest season in Muong Hoa Valley. December, January, and February are the driest months of the year, but genuinely cold, sometimes dropping near freezing on the coldest nights. May and September sit at the edges of the summer monsoon, warmer but increasingly wet.

Pack rubber boots, not hiking shoes
The terrain around Sa Pa is often muddy, even outside the heaviest rains, so rubber boots hold up far better than regular hiking shoes on the trails.

No airport, plan for a train or bus
Most visitors take the overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Lao Cai (about 8 hours) followed by a 1-hour transfer, or a direct sleeper bus from Hanoi (about 5.5 to 6 hours).

A cable car now reaches the summit of Indochina
The Fansipan cable car, a Guinness World Record holder for the longest three-rope cable car, gets you to the region's highest peak in about 15 to 20 minutes, a trip that used to take two days on foot.
