Seasons at a glance
🌟
Peak season: Feb, Mar, Apr
Songkhla's driest, most comfortable stretch, with the lowest humidity and the calmest weather for the beach at Samila. February edges out March and April as the pick of the three, just slightly less hot. Rain isn't fully gone even now, an occasional shower can still pass through, but nothing like the months on either side.
🌤️
Shoulder season: Jan, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep
This tier spans two different parts of the year. January can go either way, some years its first half brings genuinely torrential rain left over from the retreating monsoon, other years it stays comparatively calm. May through September sit in the milder middle of the rainy season: showers are frequent, sometimes daily, but long dry, intensely hot stretches are common too, especially from June through August.
Off-peak season: Oct, Nov, Dec
The heart of the northeast monsoon, or retreating monsoon, when rain becomes genuinely torrential. November is typically the worst month of the year, though October and December can bring similarly heavy downpours. Humidity and cloud cover peak here too, with the longest stretches of overcast skies all year.
Good to know
✈️
Fly into Hat Yai, not Songkhla
Songkhla has no airport of its own. Hat Yai International (HDY), about 45km southwest, is the nearest, with a roughly 45-minute drive or a bus connection into town.
🌊
Home to Thailand's largest lake
Songkhla Lake, actually a brackish lagoon system, is the largest natural lake in the country, separated from the Gulf of Thailand by a 75km sand spit and home to large flocks of migratory birds.
🐱
The Cat and Mouse Islands have their own legend
Ko Maeo (Cat Island) and Ko Nu (Mouse Island), visible from Samila Beach, come from a local folktale about a cat, a mouse, and a snake turned to stone while chasing a magic crystal.
🌧️
This coast's rainy season runs opposite the Andaman side
Facing the Gulf of Thailand, Songkhla catches its heaviest rain from the retreating northeast monsoon in October through December, opposite the timing of west-coast destinations like Phuket or Krabi, which peak earlier in the year.
